Advantages and disadvantages of being a EU member

*The EU stands for European Union; this is a group with the aim of having political and economic unity.

Advantages:

-A Louder International Voice:

Working together gives the insurance that all concerns are taken on the international stage.
400m people are represented when spoken about the EU ( more than the population of US and Russia combined) (123HelpMe,2012).

-Greater Protection for Workers:

Exploitation by employers is prevented with the protection by the European Working Time Detectives (123HelpMe,2012).
Rules are set by detectives (e.g.: number of breaks and holidays per year) they also cut down average working hours to 48 per week(123HelpMe,2012).

-Greater Equality and Social Inclusion:

Increasing the standard of equality for the EU citizens is taken seriously. They have the protection of preventing employment discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, disability and age (123HelpMe,2012).

-Environment Protection:

International co-operation and action help preventing environmental pollution. Thus, Britain has cleaner water, cleaner air and cleaner Beaches because of action at the EU level (123HelpMe,2012).

-Law Enforcement:

EU co-operation is trying to prevent and decrease organized crime, drug trafficking and terrorism (123HelpMe,2012).

Disadvantages

There is a number of disadvantages for the UK had it decided to become a member of the EU. This includes costs, practicality of policies, issues associated with the Euro currency, migration and bureaucracy, meaning there would be less democracy.

It is estimated that EU membership costs the UK 6.4 billion pounds, with other sources suggesting that the actual cost ranges between 300 and 873 pounds per head.

Because a lot of the funds received by the EU are diverted towards the Commonwealth Agricultural Policy (CAP), it was deemed inefficient as this placed low prices on food and subsequently resulted in higher prices for the consumers. It was therefore evident that over-supplying and wastage became an issue. Although changes to CAP have reduced this wastage, the issue is not entirely eliminated.

Although admitting to the EU does not automatically mean imposing the Euro, the EU has survived on unifying the currency and depending on the Euro. This has been problematic.

The notion of free labour movement meant that migration into the UK became overwhelming, with a prediction of an increase of 70m people over the next decade. This has resulted in higher house prices and congestion ( Pettinger, 2012 ).
